Graeme Bandeira scoops Political Cartoon of the Year

GRAEME BANDEIRA’S illustration of a hapless Boris Johnson trying – and failing – to pull a pint of beer to mark the reopening of pubs earlier this year has been named political cartoon of the year.

The prestigious accolade followed a public vote and is the culmination of a remarkable year for The Yorkshire Post’s cartoonist whose wide-ranging portfolio of drawings – some tearfully poignant, others very funny – has helped to chronicle the events of 2020 in his own unique style.

He was both overjoyed and overwhelmed to win the much coveted ‘Gillray Goblet’ which honours the memory, and legacy, of British caricaturist and printmaker James Gillray who was renowned for his etched political and social satires.

Bandeira’s winning entry featured a flustered PM behind the bar of the fictitious Track & Trace hostely which was serving a range of topical beers from Ye Olde Mogg – an unflattering reference to Jacob Rees-Mogg – to Rishi’s Special Brew as the Chancellor launched his Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

He found out the news while sketching a special festive cartoon which will be published in tomorrow’s edition. “I’m absolutely delighted. Honoured. Thrilled. Chuffed to bits. Run out of superlatives,” said Bandeira whose work has been previously praised by Mr Johnson as well as his predecessors David Cameron and Theresa May.
