Hague: Conservatives must pull together and deliver for the North

FORMER Conservative leader Lord Hague has called on his party to re-unite after the EU referendum and deliver on its election promises to the North.

Lord Hague, a Yorkshire MP until May last year, urged his Conservative colleagues to remember the commitments they made to win power at last year’s General Election including across a string of marginal seats in the region.

The former foreign secretary also warned that leaving the EU would be a “messy divorce” that could tie up the Government for up to a decade.

A final frantic day of campaigning today will see former London mayor Boris Johnson tour the country via helicopter for Leave while former Labour leader and Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband will appeal to Yorkshire voters for Remain support.

In one of the final salvos of the referendum, the official Remain campaign has today published a letter signed by more than 1,200 businesses, including 50 from Yorkshire, supporting EU membership.

The campaign has been defined by the increasingly acrimonious exchanges between Remain and Leave supporting Conservative MPs including senior party figures.

Lord Hague, who represented Richmond for 26 years, expressed hope both sides would respect the outcome of tomorrow’s vote.
