Heseltine slams campaigners over cutbacks

SOME campaigners are “grossly exaggerating” the impact of Government cuts and the real effect will be “nothing like as profound”, according to former Tory cabinet Minister Lord Heseltine.

The chairman of the Government’s Regional Growth Fund said private firms will create jobs as the public sector sheds posts.

“Everybody you listen to has got a harrowing story about why their particular organisation is being reduced or is going to be reduced,” he said. “A proportion of the people being interviewed grossly exaggerate the consequences because it’s their job to do so.

“If you get somebody from the Unite union you know perfectly well you are going to be in tears by the end of what he has to say if you believe a word of it, because he’s paid to articulate the worst possible scenario.”

He said the cuts anger would be “a relatively short-term debate” and would be “subsumed” by economic growth.
