Homes plan for BAE site approved

PLANS for a £100m development which will swallow up part of an historic runway at the BAE Systems factory at Brough, East Yorkshire, have been given the go-ahead.

But the Brough South scheme needed the casting vote of East Riding Council’s planning committee chairman to pass a lengthy meeting at County Hall yesterday in the face of concerns about safety and the rapid expansion of housing in the town.

The application will now be referred to Communities Secretary Eric Pickles for final approval.

It could see up to 750 homes and a new primary school built on the site close to the aircraft factory, where hundreds of workers face the axe.

A gym, hotel, care home, restaurant, supermarket, healthcare facility and business premises form part of the proposals for the 120-acre site, owned by Horncastle Group, BAE Systems and the Jordan family.

Councillors also approved the formation of a liaison panel to guide the scheme’s development.
