Hull MP goes back to classroom to help with coronavirus pressures

Hull West and Hessle MP Emma Hardy has dusted off her teaching qualifications to help a local school cope in the final days before it closes due to coronavirus.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson announced yesterday that schools would close on Friday to all but the children of key workers and those who are vulnerable.

He said keeping them open had been “increasingly challenging” during the coronavirus outbreak due to staff and pupil absence.

Ms Hardy offered her services before the announcement was made, and said on Twitter: “Infants are my specialty but I could always cover democracy with older students.

This morning she tweeted: “Today I am back in school, loving working with the kids again, such a vital time for them.”

Before becoming an MP Ms Hardy was a teacher at Willerby Carr Lane Primary School, in Hull, for 10 years.

And it was working in education that she has said brought her into politics.
