Hundreds of jobs at risk at factories

MORE than 200 jobs are under threat at two Leeds factories.

The uncertainty over 135 jobs comes as R&R Ice Cream reviews an option to close its site in Manston Lane, Cross Gates, while another 75 workers at Graphic Packaging, in Middleton Grove, Beeston, are facing redundancy.

R&R’s move would transfer production to the firm’s Leeming Bar plant, in North Yorkshire, where workers will be offered positions or face redundancy.

It comes after the North Yorkshire-based company was taken over by PAI Partners this week.

A spokesman said: “Whilst R&R has been manufacturing at Cross Gates since 1997 and has invested some £23m in the site over the years in manufacturing plant and equipment, the fabric of the buildings is now in need of considerable investment.”

Job losses at Graphic Packaging, which prints packaging for consumer products, follow its takeover of Contego Packaging Holdings Ltd and A&R Carton Holding BV last year.

It is consulting with union Unite and an employee committee at the company before an announcement is made on May 14.
