Independents to join forces

RICHMONDSHIRE Independents plan to take control of the council after taking seats from the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

The Independents now have 16 seats on Richmondshire District Council ahead of the Tories on 14 and Liberal Democrats on four, leaving the council in no overall control – but the Independents will be in talks over the weekend.

The Conservatives had previously led the council.

Independent Councillor John Blackie said: “We are not a group but we will be very likely to be able to work together. We all stood on the basis of standing up for our communities and working together for the best of the district.”

The Conservatives kept their majority of 34 on Hambleton District Council.
