Leeds on track to submit '˜ambitious' 2023 European of Culture bid

LEEDS is on track to submit an 'ambitious' bid to be named the 2023 European Capital of Culture, according to city council leader Coun Judith Blake.

Coun Blake made the comment before senior councillors are updated on the bid at tomorrow’s meeting of the council’s executive board.

The deadline for bids is October 27 this year with the UK winning city to be announced by the end of 2018.

Coun Blake said: “This latest update will give some details about the progress we’ve made as well as the amount work we still have ahead of us in order to give us the best possible chance of winning.

“From the outset, our priority has been to make sure our bid will be ambitious, experimental, open and collaborative, capturing the incredibly creative work going on each and every day in Leeds as well as being truly transformational for our communities. It’s hugely exciting to see our bid pressing ahead in such an innovative way, engaging and inspiring different people and organisations and giving us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase all Leeds has to offer.”

The competition can only be hosted in the UK five times each century and was last hosted in 2008 when Liverpool won the title.
