Main parties hold on across Yorkshire

THE major parties hung on to a string of wards in council by-elections across Yorkshire.

The Conservatives won in the East Riding seats of Howdenshire and Mid Holderness vacated by the Humberside police and crime commissioner and his deputy.

Ukip came within 84 votes of securing its first East Riding councillior in Mid Holderness.

The Liberal Democrats secured the Fulwood ward in Sheffield while Labour retained the Cross Gates and Whinmoor ward in Leeds.

Newly-elected councillor Debra Coupar said her victory “sends a clear message to Cameron and Clegg that their cuts are not working and the people have had enough of them and want a change”.
