More foreign students set to study in UK

Almost 100,000 more overseas students could be studying at UK universities and colleges in five years’ time, according to Government estimates.

Around half a million international students are already studying in Britain and this is expected to grow by up to 20 per cent in the next few years, ministers said.

Rising numbers of students from countries such as China, India, the Middle East and parts of South America are expected to travel to the UK in the future to continue their education, it was suggested.

A new Government document sets out ministers’ plans to attract tens of thousands more students to the UK, and to invest billions in education overseas.

The report says: “We must signal clearly that there is no cap on the number of students who can come to study in the UK and no intention to introduce one.”
