More than £1m spent on halted plans

COUNCIL chiefs have spent more than £1m on a planning vision for York which has been withdrawn amid concerns over the impact of a controversial retail development and community stadium on the outskirts of the city.

York Council decided to withdraw the Local Development Framework’s (LDF) core strategy last month after spending six years working on the key document.

A Government planning inspector had raised concerns over the “potential soundness” of the strategy which was withdrawn after the Monks Cross development was approved.

Now a Freedom of Information request has revealed that about £1.1m was spent between March 2006 and March 2012 on the proposed LDF.

The council has said changes to national planning policy also led to the decision to withdraw the core strategy, with the majority of the work to be used to support future plans in the city.
