MP: Why does it take a Royal wedding to get these potholes fixed?

A YORKSHIRE MP has called for more royal weddings - to fix the country’s potholed roads.

Conservative Greg Knight said engineers repaired road surfaces on the procession route between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace, including Parliament Square, in the run-up to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tying the knot last Friday.

The Tory said more royal weddings could spark further road repairs and lead to smoother surfaces across the UK.

Mr Knight, speaking in the Commons as MPs discussed future Parliamentary business, urged Leader of the House Sir George Young to allocate time for a discussion on royal nuptials.

Mr Knight (East Yorkshire) said: “Early last week potholes in Parliament Square were filled in and areas of damaged Tarmac in and around the square were resurfaced.

“Can we have a debate to see what we can do to encourage more royal weddings to take place, preferably to be held around the country, including East Yorkshire, so the rest of us can have an adequate road surface to drive on?”

Sir George said another royal wedding was due this summer in Edinburgh, between the Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips and England rugby star Mike Tindall.

Sir George, a keen cyclist often spotted riding around Parliament Square, said: “I’m sure Buckingham Palace will have taken note.”
