MPs and business leaders fight fuel duty rise

DRIVERS in the UK face the third highest diesel prices in Europe – with nearly 60 per cent going straight to the Treasury, according to the AA.

Petrol prices are the 11th highest in Europe, with current prices just 3p off the record high recorded in May.

In Yorkshire, the average price of a litre of petrol has risen in the last year from £1.17 to £1.33, while diesel has risen from £1.20 to £1.38.

Thirsk and Malton MP Anne McIntosh, chairman of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs select committee, wants MPs to explain why diesel pump prices are so high given pre-duty prices are the second lowest in Europe.
