New fund to help failing north schools

A £10m education funded will be handed to failing north schools.

The Chancellor has revealed cash will be made available to help academies “sponsor” schools in need.

Treasury documents said: “The government will provide £10m to drive up educational standards in areas of the north with the weakest provision by helping outstanding local academies sponsor local schools and supporting the expansion of the very best academy chains.”

Last night education select committee chairman Graham Stuart welcomed the news, but urged the Government not to spend it all on inner city schools.

The Beverly MP said: “This is excellent news. My Committee has been clear that collaboration has great potential to drive improvement in our education system. Careful consideration will need to be given to ensure struggling schools in remote rural and coastal areas can benefit from this extra resource.”
