A new generation of politicians for Leeds

FOUR budding young politicians have been selected to represent Leeds at the UK Youth Parliament.

More than 30 youngsters aged 11 to 18 from schools across the city applied to become members of the UK Youth Parliament by writing a manifesto on a subject important to them.

A panel of other young people made a shortlist of nine candidates who were entered into election.

The new members of youth parliament are Muzdalfa Ahmed, 17, from Allerton High School; Liberty Branston, 12, from Guiseley School; Scarlet Rowe, 15, from Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School and Charlotte Williams, 12, from Benton Park Secondary School.

The candidates’ manifestos covered a wide range of subjects including closing the gender pay gap, giving young people more of a voice in how the city is run, votes at 16, improving bus transport and better mental health services.

The successful candidates will now regularly meet with MPs and local councillors, organise events, run campaigns, make speeches, hold debates and ensure the views of young people are listened to by decision makers.
