New rules for retired council employees

NEW rules have been introduced at Barnsley Council, meaning that those leaving the authority and collecting their pension cannot then be re-employed.

Previously, if an employee left the council to take voluntary redundancy or voluntary severance, they could then apply for a new job at the authority after just four weeks.

They could have also been re-employed by Barnsley Council through an agency.

However, now, those collecting a pension will never be able to work for the council again, and those who take voluntary severance will have to wait a year.

Being taken on in a new job after retiring is common in other public sector organisations, such as the police.
