The recreation of the video for Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit I Really Like You was made in the run-up to last year’s general election in the hope that it would boost Mr Clegg’s popularity by “going viral”.

In the original film, Hanks is seen waving, posing for selfies and exchanging high-fives with passers-by as he walks in the streets of Manhattan. The Times revealed that Mr Clegg, who is MP for Sheffield Hallam, re-enacted the scenes in Gravesend, Kent.

But the video - made at a cost of almost £8,000 - never saw the light of day during the election campaign - after which the Lib Dem presence at Westminster was decimated.

And the party remains determined to keep it under wraps.

A spokesman said: “Yes, we made the video - and no you can’t see it.”
