Parties go far to recruit Yorkshire candidates

THE major parties have had to cast the net far and wide to find candidates willing to stand in seats they are far from likely to win.

The Liberal Democrats’ candidates in Keighley and Shipley list their home addresses as Reading and Hampshire respectively while Twickenham is home to the Conservatives’ candidates in both Rother Valley and Sheffield Central.

However, when it comes to distance from Yorkshire none can beat Yorkshire First leader Richard Carter whose home address is listed as Norway although he actually moved back to the region several months ago.

The details have emerged from the formal nominations for candidates in each constituency which closed on Thursday.

They show that across Yorkshire, the UK Independence Party is fielding a candidate in every seat with the Greens contesting the vast majority of constituencies.

In all, 28 parties are represented with some of the less familiar including the Pirate Party, World Peace Through Song and Cannabis is Safer Than Alcohol.

Nick Clegg, who is facing a tight race in Sheffield Hallam, will hope voters read their ballot paper carefully as another Clegg, Steven, is running for the English Democrats.

His other opponents include Jim Stop The Fiasco Wild while Labour leader Ed Miliband must beat Nick The Flying Brick to hold onto Doncaster North.

The rapid demise of the British National Party is underlined by it fielding just one candidate in Yorkshire, in Rotherham, just six years after the party secured enough votes to win one of Yorkshire’s seat in the European Parliament.
