Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams revealed television industry representatives took the device into Parliament for a demonstration but it “began to emit a foul smell and smoke, and then sparked and exploded”.

Mr Adams was highlighting the dangers of set-top boxes being bought by consumers to access channels that normally require a subscription.

He said the incident “tells us entirely how shabby the entire piracy industry is”.

He continued: “It is dominated by criminals who do unsavoury things with their proceeds and do not have a care in the world for consumers - much less for creators.”

Mr Adams said the devices were making it harder for content creators to be properly paid for their work.

MPs were debating the protection of intellectual property in a debate led by Mr Adams.
