Politician sorry for drink-fuelled rant

A LIBERAL Democrat councillor has apologised to a political rival after a drink-fuelled outburst while they were at York City’s play-off
final at Wembley Stadium.

Coun Nigel Ayre has written to a senior Labour member of York Council, Sonja Crisp, to express his regret at confronting her after the match in May, which saw the Minstermen promoted to the Football League after defeating Luton Town. Coun Ayre, who is alleged to have urinated in a public car park, admitted he “had a bit too much to drink” before criticising Labour’s equalities agenda.

Coun Crisp, who succeeded Coun Ayre as the cabinet member for leisure and culture, claimed onlookers were “shocked at his alcohol-induced behaviour” and added: “I want to put this upsetting incident behind me and I look forward to a constructive working relationship with Coun Ayre.”

But Coun Ayre maintained
Labour is mounting a “politically motivated attack” on him after details of his apology became public.
