Pooled Whitehall functions ‘could save large sums’

THE Government could save “significant sums of money” if it pooled back-office functions such as finance, HR and procurement, according to a Public Accounts Committee report.

The report finds that shared service centres have failed to deliver the savings they should have. Despite costing £1.4 billion – £500m over budget – to organise it calculates that in some cases the changes cost the taxpayer more.

It concludes the current strategy will only be effective if the Cabinet Office “demonstrates strong leadership to deliver greater value for money”.
