Prime Minister to meet Hull family over missing baby ashes

David Cameron said he would get together with Mike and Tiny Trowhill, who live in Ancaster Avenue in Hull, to hear more about their late son William, who died in 1994.

His ashes were scattered following his death without his parents consent, and today the Prime Minister has said he will look at the case after being asked by Hull North MP Diana Johnson to discuss the need for a local and national enquiry into baby ashes.

Mr Cameron said: “Of course I completely understand how her constituents feel. This must have been an absolutely tragic event only made worse by not knowing what’s happened to their child.

I’m very happy to arrange that meeting. Let me look at it very carefully and see what I can do.”

Speaking during Prime Minister’s Question session in the House of Commons at lunchtime, MP Diana Johnson said: “The Prime Minister will understand the heartbreak at the death of a child.

“For parents then not to know what’s happened to the ashes of that child - as is the case with Mike and Tina Trowhill in Hull, and others families up and down the country – must be simply very cruel.

“Will the Prime Minister agree to meet with Mike and Tina to discuss why we need a national and a local inquiry as to what happened in that case around baby ashes?”

An inquiry into missing ashes has previously been held in Shrewsbury. Since then, an increasing number of Hull families have been coming forward to Diana Johnson say that they had been given incorrect information by crematoriums about what had happened to the ashes of their deceased babies.
