A large police presence is at the site, buildings have been sealed off and staff have been told to take shelter.

Air traffic has also been suspended.

The Ministry of Defence said the incident was in the hands of local force Suffolk Police, and that more details would follow shortly. An arrest is believed to have been made.

Although run by the RAF, the base is primarily used by the United States Air Force (USAF). The Americans are due to relocate operations to Germany, and the MOD announced in 2015 that the site would be sold in the future.
