In a move underlining the concern in the ‘Better Together’ camp, David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband agreed to miss Prime Minister’s Questions in favour of campaigning in Scotland.

A joint statement from the three men said: “We want to be listening and talking to voters about the huge choice they face.

“Our message to the Scottish people will be simple: ‘We want you to stay.’”

Speaking last night, Mr Clegg, the MP for Sheffield Hallam, described the referendum as a “momentous decision which can have consequences which last generations”.

But Scotland’s First Minister insisted the move was a sign of the disarray in the ‘no’ camp.

Alex Salmond said: “The No campaign think that they are losing this campaign - and these hugely distrusted Westminster leaders trooping up to Scotland is only going to boost that process.

“The No campaign are making blunder after blunder, but this is by far the biggest yet.”

As part of last ditch efforts to persuade Scots voters to stick with the United Kingdom, the Saltire will be flown over Yorkshire from Saturday. York Council responded to a call by Mr Miliband to fly the Saltire in cities, towns and villages across the UK.

Council leader James Alexander said: “I’m pleased that political leaders in the city are speaking as one on this important issue for the future of the union and all countries within it.”
