The Festival of Debate is in its sixth year, bringing with it more than 130 public events from 14 April to 31 May, reaching more than 20,000 people.

The event, also featuring speakers like commentator Ash Sarkar and journalist George Monbiot, is run as a not-for-profit partnership between more than 100 organisations across Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley - from experts who work in health and wellbeing and community development to academics, researchers, artists and individual active citizens who have a keen interest in particular issues.

Festival programmer Joe Kriss said: “At a time when Britain has been increasingly polarised along lines of North and South, young and old, left and right, the Festival of Debate creates a critical platform for communities to have these conversations in public. Our hope is that the festival encourages people to participate in their communities and try and make change, together.”

The Festival of Debate was launched in 2015 with a view to provoking discussion ahead of the General Election, aiming to combat apathy in politics.
