Talks call as factory jobs in balance

A UNION is calling for urgent talks to save a Bridlington factory, which is set to close with the loss of 50 jobs.

Workers at Elliott Modular Buildings, at Carnaby, have been told the company, which is involved in the fit-out of modular buildings, many for the NHS, needs to save £6m nationally.

Consultation is underway but it is already scheduled to close at the end of April, with the work transferring to the West Midlands.

Acting regional secretary of UCATT Yorkshire Rob Morris said it would have a severe knock-on effect as there was already a severe shortage of skilled jobs locally. In 2011, workers took up to a 25 per cent pay cut to stave off closure.

Elliott said all alternatives to closure would be given “full consideration”.
