Tax boost for Yorkshire video games firms

Yorkshire’s growing computer games industry is in line for a major cash boost as the Government unveiled plans for tax breaks for the UK’s creative arts.

The Treasury yesterday launched a consultation on plans unveiled in the Budget for generous tax relief already available to the UK film industry to be broadened to include video games, animators and parts of the television industry.

Yorkshire is a growing hub for the production of video games, with firms such as Team17 in Ossett – which wrote the Worms games – and Rockstar Leeds, which produced the Grand Theft Auto games on Sony’s PSP console.

A Treasury spokesperson said: “Yorkshire is a proven hub for innovative video games development. These reliefs, set to be among the most generous anywhere in the world, can only help to generate more investment and jobs.”
