Technology initiative for research staff

Research staff in Yorkshire will be part of a new Government initiative which aims to restore Britain’s manufacturing prowess and help close the North-South divide.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will today announce that the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Rotherham – part of the University of Sheffield – will be a key partner in England’s first Technology Innovation Centre (TIC).

The Government announced a £200m scheme last year to set up a number of TICs across the country, focusing on different areas such as manufacturing, energy and resource efficiency.

The innovation centres will sit between academia and business, enabling cutting-edge research to be commercialised more quickly for use in new manufacturing technologies.

The first TIC will be a partnership between seven existing centres – including the AMRC in Rotherham – and focus primarily on advanced manufacturing.

Mr Clegg will say today: “A great deal of potential remains untapped. Now is the moment to rediscover Britain’s capacity for invention and design.”
