Tory MPs want spending statement

Every taxpayer would receive a detailed breakdown of how their money is spent by the Government under a proposal being pushed by Tory MPs.

They are calling for the HM Revenue and Customs to provide personalised statements showing exactly what each annual tax bill pays for.

The idea will be put to the House of Commons in a 10 Minute Rule Bill tomorrow by backbench Tory Ben Gummer.

He is being supported by Treasury Committee chairman Andrew Tyrie and Graham Brady, chairman of the powerful 1922 Committee of Tory MPs.

Downing Street said yesterday it backed the principle of giving taxpayers a better idea of how their money was spent but that there would be “practicalities” to consider.

Prime Minister David Cameron’s spokesman said: “We welcome the idea.

“Clearly more transparency in the tax system is a good thing. People understanding better where their money that they pay into the tax system goes is a good thing.”
