Town hit as privatised binmen strike

BINMEN in Doncaster who are currently half way through a series of one-day strikes over pay yesterday announced that a total walk -out will begin next Tuesday.

About 100 members of the union Unite staged their first stoppage last Friday.

They also went on strike last Monday.

They plan to strike again this Friday and on Monday.

Union officials say workers want a £1 an hour pay increase from employer SITA, which has the contract to collect rubbish in Doncaster, to bring them into line with colleagues in Kirklees.

Doncaster Council’s assistant director of environment, Gill Gillies, said: “We have now been formally notified by SITA that a continuous strike will begin on Tuesday in addition to the strike days on Friday and Monday.

“Obviously this is going to have an impact on our bin collections.
