Union backs calls for joint strike action

The Government is facing the growing threat of a huge strike by more than 1.5 million workers after the biggest civil service union backed co-ordinated industrial action.

Momentum is now building for a mass walkout on July 10 in protest at coalition policies on pay, jobs and public sector cuts.

A strike could involve council workers, teachers, firefighters, civil servants and others employed in the public sector. Further stoppages later in the year could involve health workers, who are angry that the Government refused to accept a recommended across-the-board one per cent wage rise.

Delegates at the annual conference of the Public and Commercial Services union backed calls for joint action to challenge the Government’s pay policy.

“We’re skint,” said delegate Jane Aitchison, from Leeds. “We have started shopping at Poundland out of necessity.”
