Union fears for manufacturing site

Union officials are calling on a manufacturing firm to reverse its decision to cut 50 Leeds jobs.

Pegler Yorkshire, which makes fittings, taps and valves, recently announced the cuts at its Stourton site, where 135 are employed.

Union Unite fears the cuts could mean the Leeds site will close and the firm’s ‘Yorkshire Fittings’ product will no longer be made in the county.

The suspicions come after Aalbert Industries, the firm’s owner, transferred French operation Saint Denis Hotel into the Pegler Yorkshire Group in July.

Ian Tonks, Unite officer, said: “We do not believe there is a sound economic case for the job cuts and we are demanding that the company reverses this decision and guarantees the future of the site going forward.” The firm also employs 295 staff in Doncaster and 85 staff in Rotherham.

Stuart Anderson, managing director of Pegler Yorkshire Group, said the firm remains in legal consultation over the job cuts with GMB and Unite and has meetings planned for January.
