We will double the number of free schools - Cameron

THE number of free schools will be doubled over the next five years if the Conservatives win the General Election, David Cameron will promise today.

The Prime Minister will announce approvals for 49 new free schools - taking the current total to more than 400 - and set out plans to open 500 more by 2020.

The Conservatives claim free schools, which are opened by community groups with state funding, help increase choice for parents.

But critics argue they take resources away from the rest of the state system and are opened in areas regardless of whether more places are needed.

In a speech later today, Mr Cameron will say: “If you vote Conservative, you will see the continuation of the free schools programme at the rate you’ve seen in the last three years.

“That means, over the next parliament, we hope to open at least 500 new free schools resulting in 270,000 new school places.

“Remember - we’re the only party that is committed to this. The only party that’s opening up the education system so we can get more good places for your children.

“And isn’t that what every parent wants - a great education for their child? You deserve the security of knowing your child is getting just that. And with the Conservatives you should expect nothing less.”
