Wharton under fire for Leave stance

Northern Powerhouse Minister James Wharton is supporting the Leave campaign while pursuing Britain’s claim for compensation from the EU’s Solidarity Fund following the winter floods which devastated parts of Yorkshire.

The Remain campaign argues the fund is an example of the security membership of the EU gives to the UK.

Remain supporter Mary Creagh, the Wakefield MP, said: “Leeds, Calderdale and York are still recovering from the devastating winter floods, so it beggars belief that the Minister asking for much­needed EU funding is also campaigning for Britain to leave the EU.

“The Leave campaign just don’t get it. Pulling together in times of crisis is what we Brits do, and this is just another reason that we’re stronger, safer and better off in the EU.”

The Government initially appeared reluctant to ask for help from the EU Solidarity Fund amid suggestions of reluctance to be seen asking for money from Brussels ahead of the referendum.

However, Mr Wharton announced in February that a claim would be submitted which could deliver up to £125m to flood affected areas.

He warned it could be many months before a decision is reached.
