Wind energy message taken to heart of the EU

EUROPEAN Union officials have been urged to help Yorkshire achieve its ambition to be a major hub for the offshore wind energy industry.

A delegation from Local Government Yorkshire and Humber, the body representing Yorkshire councils. has been in Brussels highlighting the region’s potential.

They also met the region’s MEPs and urged them to do what they can to help the region access European funding and to promote Yorkshire on the continent.

Coun Derek Bastiman, deputy leader of Scarborough Council and chairman of Local Government Yorkshire and Humber’s improvement and European board, said: “When we work together our coast offers over 100 miles of shop front to the North Sea, leading to a world class industrial hinterland which can provide everything the offshore industry needs.

“The Yorkshire and Humber region has it all. With the right leadership and organisation we are world beaters. This is what we are trying to achieve.”

The delegation was in Brussels holding meetings on the margins of a gathering of the Committee of the Regions which brings together people in local government across Europe to help shape European policy.

Around £30 billion of European funding has already been earmarked for low carbon projects over the next six years.
