Yorkshire holiday park plans to build luxury lodges to replace golf course after failing to attract bookings

Plans submitted to East Riding Council from Pure Leisure Group, owners of Bridlington Links Golf and Holiday Park in Bridlington, stated interest in the nine hole course had declined.

It now receives an average of two bookings a week.

Documents stated having both nine and 18 hole courses at the park was no longer viable, with plans for the former to become a practice or ‘pitch and put’ area.

They added the lodges would help meet rising demand for holiday lets in the area as staycations continue to grow in popularity.

A spokesperson for Pure Leisure Group said the plans followed a spike in demand for their holiday lets.

The spokesperson said: “While these plans weren’t originally drawn up with coronavirus in mind, they would work extremely well as more people holiday in the UK. We’re very busy at the moment, we can’t keep up with demand. We’re fully booked until the middle of October.

“Our existing development has filled up extremely quickly. We think the new lodges will contribute to the all round package of the holiday park.”

The council previously granted permission to build 50 lodges on the site, in Flamborough Road, Sewerby, in February 2016.

It comes as the same holiday park also submitted plans for a new 84-bed hotel to house guests for weddings, conferences and other events at its clubhouse.

The latest application stated the nine hole golf course was now “surplus to requirements”.

Documents stated: “The proposals consist of 63 luxury holiday lodges as an addition to the existing holiday park.

“Over the last two years the nine hole course has had, on average, less than two bookings a week and generates an annual receipt of around £483 a year.

“The proposals will involve the expansion of the existing holiday park with the provision of high quality holiday accommodation which seeks to cater for both prospective holiday home owners and short break tourists.

“They seek to respond to opportunities within the tourism sector, catering for a range of growing, alternative tourism offers, whilst also supporting the wider economy.”

Each single storey lodge would measure 6m by 12m and would be available for sale and to rent.

The site is designed to allow visitors access to nearby cycling and walking routes. It is served by public transport links to Bridlington and to other nearby attractions including Sewerby Hall and Gardens.

Documents stated the lodges would be low lying, minimising their visual impact and effect on Bridlington’s Heritage Coast area.
