Yorkshire MPs pay tribute to ‘greatest’ modern British PM

FORMER Shadow Home Secretary David Davis led the tributes from Conservative MPs across Yorkshire yesterday following the death of Britain’s “greatest modern Prime Minister”.

The Haltemprice and Howden MP and one-time Tory leadership frontrunner highlighted Baroness Thatcher’s achievements on the world stage in the 1980s battle between East and West.

“Margaret Thatcher was the greatest of modern British Prime Ministers, and was central to the huge transformation of the whole world that took place after the fall of the Soviet Union,” he said.

“Millions of people in Britain and around the world owe her a debt of gratitude for their freedom and their quality of life.”

Thirsk and Malton MP Anne McIntosh focused on Lady Thatcher’s radical free-market domestic reforms, lauding the “sea change” she oversaw in how Britain was run.

“The sad passing of Lady Thatcher marks the end of a great era in British politics,” she said.

York Outer MP Julian Sturdy offered a personal response, stating: “Baroness Thatcher was one of my leading influences, and she’s a huge part of the reason I’m in politics today.

“I expect many of my Conservative colleagues in Westminster and indeed across the country would say much the same.”

Lady Thatcher’s ultra-Conservative values were reiterated by Godfrey Bloom, UKIP’s Euro MP for Yorkshire, who described her as “the last real Conservative with a spine”.
