And, when its chief executive Paul Plummer says more powers should be devolved to local bodies, like Transport for the North, it makes a mockery of Chris Grayling's obstinacy.

For the benefit of the Transport Secretary, Mr Plummer is an industry expert. He’s also not alone. Others, like Network Rail’s chairman Sir Peter Hendy, have also suggested that this should be the direction of travel for future policy-making.

And, given this was a key demand of the joint editorial published by The Yorkshire Post, and other newspapers, in early June, it’s even more galling that 10 Downing Street has still to respond. Does Theresa May not realise the economic, physical, health and social toll that months of delays and disruption is having on the lives of commuters? And this before the insult of a 3.2 per cent fare rise in the New Year...
