Yorkshire set to have its own in-out referendum

IT MAY not be on a par with the referendum on Scottish independence, but in a few weeks hundreds of Yorkshire residents are set to have their own vote on where their future lies.

People living in parts of East Riding bordering Hull are to be given a postal vote on whether they want to become part of the city.

Hull councillors recently revived the idea that the city’s boundaries should be reviewed prompting one Cottingham councillor to suggest that residents would prefer “barbed wire and trenches” to separate them from the city.

East Riding Council will today consider proposals to offer residents in the Dale, South Hunsley, Willerby and Kirkella, Tranby, South West Holderness, Mid Holderness, Hessle, Cottingham North and Cottingham South wards a vote on their future.

Council leader Stephen Parnaby said: “It is disappointing that the issue of boundaries has again been raised and I feel that the best course of action is to put this to the electorate in the areas concerned.”
