Yorkshire stage for Green conference

GREEN Party leader Caroline Lucas will officially announce during a visit to the region today that the party’s autumn conference will be held in Sheffield.

Ms Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion and the country’s first Green Party MP, will meet with students at Sheffield Hallam University this afternoon as she announces that the Green Party will be at the university’s Conference 21 centre from September 9 to 12 this year.

She will then travel to York and Leeds by train, before ending a day in the region by addressing a meeting at the Brian Jackson Centre in Huddersfield at 7.30pm.

Ms Lucas’s trip to Yorkshire is part of a three-day national tour ahead of the local elections in May – and just a few days before she addresses the party’s spring conference in Cardiff.

She said: “I look forward to starting my tour in Sheffield and will be delighted to announce that the Green Party conference is coming to the city in September.

“Our delegates are sure to be impressed by the modern facilities at Conference 21 and will no doubt take advantage of its close proximity to many of the city’s attractions.

“I also welcome the opportunity to meet with Sheffield students, many of whom have been at the forefront of tuition fees protests.

“Greens have consistently opposed tuition fees and cuts in education funding – and we will continue to stand firm on our principles.”
