Yorkshire stands out as another round of devolution deals is done

YORKSHIRE LOOKS set to be one of the last pieces of Chancellor George Osborne’s Northern Powerhouse jigsaw after a fresh round of devolution deals were announced.

The Treasury confirmed the Liverpool City Region group of councils had joined the Sheffield City Region, Tees Valley, North-East and Greater Manchester in agreeing to take more control over their own affairs in return for adopting elected mayors.

West, North and East Yorkshire council leaders have so far been unable to agree how the area should take on devolved powers in areas such as transport and skills.

West Yorkshire leaders want to see a ‘Leeds City Region’ deal agreed which includes Harrogate, Craven, Selby and York.

But North Yorkshire County Council, East Riding and Hull have been pressing for a broader Greater Yorkshire covering the whole of North, East and West Yorkshire.

Council leaders in the region have insisted they are in no rush to reach agreements and that getting the details right is more important than speed.
