Yorkshire's chance to put questions to Labour's top team

Shadow Chancellor Anneliese Dodds and Shadow Business Secretary Ed Miliband will launch a series of new listening events where the public can put their question to Labour's top team, with the first being held in Yorkshire on July 1,

People in the region are invited to take part in the discussion, with the Yorkshire Post selecting the questions to be posed.

Among the topics discussed will be the impact of coronavirus on people in Yorkshire, how to protect jobs during the crisis and what the economic recovery should look like.

In recent week’s Labour has called for a ‘Back to Work Budget’ to protect jobs during the economic downturn caused by Covid-19 and launched a consultation on ways to “kick-start a green recovery” from the pandemic, to help young people secure jobs in green industries.

Ms Dodds said: “Labour has a mountain to climb after December’s election. We need to rebuild trust with people across Yorkshire, and that starts with listening.

“I want to hear from people and businesses in Yorkshire about how they are coping, and what more they want to see done to protect the region from job losses over the coming months.

“I am concerned that unless the Governments acts urgently, we face the prospect of mass unemployment as the furlough scheme ends. That’s why Labour has called for a Back to Work Budget with one focus: jobs, jobs, jobs.”

Mr Miliband added: “This event is about having an honest, frank conversation with voters in Yorkshire.

“We need to listen to people about why we lost the last election and how Labour can be a constructive opposition to help the country through the coronavirus crisis.

“We face a historic recession and a climate crisis. We need to act now to kick start a green recovery. I want to hear people’s views about creating green jobs, particularly for the young people at risk of unemployment.”

The event will take place at 1.30pm on Wednesday, July 1 and will be held via Zoom.
