Coun James Lewis, chairman of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s transport committee, said: “The growth in passenger numbers in the north has been exceptional, and it’s unacceptable that many passengers have to stand for long periods - more so when you remember than TransPennine Express routes will lose trains in 2015. So it’s understandable that passengers value getting a seat, even if it may only be for part of their journey.

“We need to see investment in modern, high-capacity trains, replacing outdated pacer units and electrification of routes to release diesel trains to strengthen busy commuter services, so that passengers can travel in greater comfort.”

Rail Minister Claire Perry said the Government had listened to concerns about fares with its decision to limit January rises for regulated tickets to the rate of inflation.

“I also understand the frustration of rail passengers forced to stand on busy services and that is why I am calling on train operators to do more,” she said.
