YP Letters: Brexit plan fails to take back control

JUST to mention a few of the consequences of the Chequers paper – the Government will have no say in the following:

What electric bulbs we can use, what fruit and veg we can grow, how we manage our waste disposal, overtime working, what vacuum cleaners we use. If James Dyson came up with a new product he would not be able to sell it here until he had it signed off by the EU. The list is endless.

How is this fulfilling the Brexit mandate to take back control?

As for those of you who say there is no alternative plan, David Davis said in the Commons that his Brexit department had been working on an alternative plan for months.

This was based on the Canada free trade agreement but with additions, all of which were in treaties the EU has with other countries. This, he said, would give us the relationship we want, satisfy the Irish border problem and not relinquish our sovereignty. At Prime Minister’s Questions last week he asked Theresa May to publish this but she refused.

DESPITE meetings at Chequers and White Papers in Parliament, at the moment, neither Leavers or Remainers nor business 
know what final leaving package will be agreed with the EU, 
as the EU has yet to turn the 
final screw.

For the sake of clarity of purpose, is it not time to call their bluff and inform the EU that we will be leaving in March next year on a no deal, no divorce bill basis?

At least in the short time remaining this will allow everybody to focus and plan accordingly.

As we import more from the EU than we export to them, there is no reason why the EU cannot put forward proposals to maintain their current trading status after Brexit. Whether we accept them, or not, would then be up to us.

BREXITEERS like R Hartley (The Yorkshire Post, July 20), in the tale of the horse called ‘Leave’, thrive on portraying themselves as the downtrodden victims of the political establishment, the EU bullies, and standing up for the common people.

Only if and when they finally get their way of a no deal Brexit, which I admit is now looking increasingly likely, will the majority of people realise that, in fact, they, too, are the victims of the Brexiteer bullies.

THE Chequers plan for Brexit shows that real ‘democracy’ just does not actually exist in reality. The people never really get the people who represent them because of the party system.

Indeed, the party control on democracy has to be stopped if there is to be ‘real’ democracy and not the constant mirage that it really is. In this respect, if the 17.4 million who voted to leave the EU want to know why this will never really be the case, I would point them to Parliament and those who they voted in to represent them – party MPs and not the people’s MPs.

WHAT Churchill did in our ‘darkest hour’ was unbelievable. Who else could have done it?

As for Europe, had it been for trade only, we would not have voted out. The EU has put us in this mess, due to their political interference. That is why most of us voted out.

JOHN Redwood (The Yorkshire Post, July 17) has also written about World Trade Organisation rules and the way we can use them. Very different information from that which is so often put out by the EU and others.

It really is time the public knew that “crashing out” with no deal is not the disaster made out by the Remainers.

Why is the WTO option not brought to the argument more often?

Global threat runs out of gas

I COULD not get my regular crumpets at the supermarket the other day. “They have run out of CO2,” I was told. Now remind me; was it not around 10 years ago that life on earth was threatened by the growth of CO2?

So why is no-one owning up to this threat and admitting ‘we got it wrong’. But, of course, that’s not the way global warming works, is it? A running range of threats to life on earth and when proved to be wrong – forget it and move on.

A pretty good money-spinner from those daft enough to be taken in by the whole fairy story. But not President Trump for one – whatever you may think of his other activities.

Trump trip achieved little

WHY does the world listen to the rants of the US President?

President Trump’s visit to the UK appears to have achieved little, and cost the country a fortune, but for what benefit?

He spent 57 minutes at Windsor Castle with our Queen and wow, I bet she was enthralled! A little longer with our PM but more time golfing in Scotland than time with the dignitaries he actually met. What a waste of time his visit appears to have been, especially with all the protests it generated – but his arrogance avoided any confrontations.
