YP Letters: Donors and moaners mourn departure of EU gravy train

THE political clout of the Lib Dems resides largely in the House of Lords, 109 of them, after their near decimation in the Commons. They were regularly stuffed into Parliament during the Cameron/Clegg Coalition and it now seems their major purpose in life is to continue the tenacious campaign to delay and prevent the Brexit process.

They purport to represent democracy but are, in fact, about as democratic as the goings-on in a turkey farm. For many, the chosen refuge, beyond Parliament, is a gravy-moistened sinecure in the hallowed corridors of EU headquarters. Their infatuation with Brussels long ago escalated the institution to the level of a holy cow.

IT is, of course, quite wrong that the old europhiles (now re-styled as Remains) should block our democratic vote to leave the EU.

What is equally outlandish but seldom highlighted is the way that the Remains merely assume, without giving any factual justification, that EU control is better than anything the UK Parliament, controlled by the British electorate, could manage independently.

The next time a Remain politician, or pundit, invites us to feel their pain about the disappearance of EU hegemony, we should respond by asking them what EU governance provides that would be impossible if we were an independent nation.

SIR Andrew Cook (The Yorkshire Post, January 16) continues to ignore the will of the people regarding Brexit, as expected, while John Redwood at least acknowledges that a 52 per cent democratic winning vote should count for something.

‘Cookie’ should do what we were told to do by Norman Tebbit – ‘get on your bike’ – and chase new trade opportunities, instead of being pessimistic because Brexit didn’t go his way.

DOES Sir Andrew Cook (The Yorkshire Post, January 16) seriously expect us to believe that he is one of the Tory party’s biggest donors out of the goodness of his heart?

What a load of tripe, he is a big donor to buy himself access to the people in power for his own ends; otherwise why is he threatening to stop donating unless we stay in the single market?

That is tantamount to blackmail.
