YP Letters: Fears for farmers if we abandon EU support

ANDREW Dennis is in favour of leaving the EU. He believes farmers would be better off leaving. It might be better for the country to leave the EU, but it is arguable if farmers should (The Yorkshire Post, February 13 and 15).

David Davis, the Haltemprice and Howden MP, has said that some replacement for farming support would have to be made available. I am not convinced.

My own MP showed little sympathy or understanding of agricultural economy in a meeting at Bishop Burton before the election.

The Conservatives have been notorious in their support of agriculture way back to the times of compensatory amounts.

Whether or not farm single payments should be removed is arguable, but it is a fact that if we left the EU, Europe would still maintain payments to EU farmers, thereby giving them an advantage.

It is no good saying that British farmers would be protected, there is no way our own decimated industry could supply our own food security needs without imports from Europe now.

Conservative governments cannot protect the steel industry, the fisheries etc.

Why should they protect the agricultural industry?
