YOU would think that our current Prime Minister would have studied recent history before her disastrous move to call the ill-fated and unnecessary election on June 8.

Previous prime ministers in the shape of Gordon Brown and David Cameron threw away an opportunity to dominate the political make-up at the time.

Brown, it will be remembered, failed to call an early election after taking over from Tony Blair.

David Cameron’s calling of a referendum on continued EU membership was also unnecessary, just like Theresa May’s snap election which has produced a political impasse that your editorial (The Yorkshire Post, July 10) so amply catalogues. Will PMs ever learn?

From: Hilary Andrews, Leeds.

I APPRECIATE that Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis is a sincere and caring politician (The Yorkshire Post, July 12) but surely he can understand that Theresa May had to do a deal with the DUP in order to stop his party leader Jeremy Corbyn and shadow chancellor John McDonnell bankrupting the country? Labour may be able to whip up crowds with their hysterical tactics but, if they ever got into positions of power, the country would go to the dogs.
