YP Letters: More is at stake than the cleanliness of Britain's beaches

From: Philip Watts, Willerby.
Thursday is decision day for Britain and the EU.Thursday is decision day for Britain and the EU.

OF all the opinions on the EU referendum I have read in your pages, the letter from Carol Fulton regarding clean beaches is probably the daftest (The Yorkshire Post, June 18).

She and everyone casting their vote should bear in mind that the EU’s avowed aim is to create a superstate, dressed up as a United States of Europe. My fear is that due to the undemocratic nature of the EU, it will be more akin to the former USSR, albeit benign, at least in the initial stages.

I will therefore be casting my vote for my grandchildren’s future in a sovereign nation and independent state, which I believe to be far more important than a clean beach.

From: Tony Atkinson, Bingley.

SURELY I cannot be the only person in our county who believes that the daily orchestrated nuggets from Messrs Cameron and Osborne are the best possible advert for the Brexit campaign. just as Boris is for the Remainees?

From: A K Biggin, Bradford.

AS a final point prior to the referendum, Jean Monnet, the “father” of the European Union, memorably stated “we must work to closer and closer union and if the people don’t like it, we mustn’t tell them”. Plus ca change!

From: Tony McCobb, Kirk Ella.

THE EU is larger than any individual economy in the world, and accounts for almost half of UK trade. Yorkshire and the Humber exported £8.4bn worth of goods to the EU in 2014. Leaving Europe will endanger jobs.

From: Paul Morley, Long Preston, Skipton.

Much as I wish to leave the EU, I suppose we must look on the bright side. If we stay in and become a big country called Europe, we will not have to put up with the Euro football disrupting TV schedules every four years.

From: Alan Chapman, Bingley.

THINK of the changes that have come in during the last 40 years. Something that started as a trading arrangement has become an increasingly political union. Where do you think we will be in 2056? Let us get out now.

From: Trevor Stones, Rawcliffe.

JUNE 23 is the day to speak for our country so that our country can again speak for us. The muzzled voice we presently have in Europe has not served us. David Cameron’s best efforts only prove that this voice will never be stronger than it is right now.
