WHAT a wonderful spectacle the Tour de Yorkshire turned out to be. Apart from praising the riders and organisers, I’d like to pay special tribute to the police motorbike riders who provided a “rolling” roadblock for the event.

I watched the race on the Friday, standing with a hundred or so people at a road junction just outside the village of Towton, south of Tadcaster.

After the first police rider arrived, the second turned up a few minutes later and took his place. This process was repeated as motorbike after motorbike replaced its predecessor. Then, off they would roar, down the road, to station themselves at the multitude of junctions along the way – and this all the way from Beverley to Settle. This must have taken great organisation and skill, and is an often overlooked part of such a big sporting event.

WHY no Tour de Yorkshire report on the BBC national news on Sunday? It’s time those in London realised we do exist in Yorkshire. This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase this wonderful county.

I bet it would have been different if the aerial commentary and pictures had failed during the London Marathon.
