YP Letters: Vague signs make it hard to keep to the speed limit

From: Peter Haddington, Prospect Place, Bradford.

THERE is a main road near where I live that is wide and covers a long distance, and the speed limit rules are vague.

I have never seen a speed limit sign on the part where the police tend to position their speed traps on a fairly regular basis.

The speed limit on this road used to be 40mph and several people, including myself, thought it still was, but it is now 30mph.

Instead of having speed limit signs nowadays to save money, the motorist has to look for lamp posts, and try to gauge the distance between them at times to work out the speed limits. There are other such roads in Britain where the signage is also ambiguous.

I have held a clean licence for 45 years and do drive with care, but it is easy to make an error as I did recently for being just over the limit on this road. I am all in favour of making the roads safer, but is the positioning of these speed traps really what this is all about? I am not convinced it is.

The cars on Britain’s roads
are getting bigger and more powerful while the speed limits are getting lower.

People who have total disregard for the rules on Britain’s roads have all the ammunition they need to drive at excessive speeds, no matter how many traffic calming measures are in place.
